Las Vegas has long been a hub for reinvention — and no one represents that spirit better than Zack Gray. From his early days in California’s emo and indie scene to building a career in electronic music and ultimately launching his own artist development company, Zack’s story is one of resilience, faith, and finding purpose.
This conversation with JD Diaz on Movers & Shakers in Las Vegas pulls back the curtain on the highs and lows of the music industry and how Zack is shaping the future for independent artists.
Early Life and Musical Roots in California
Where did Zack Gray grow up? Born in Roseville, California, just outside Sacramento, Zack discovered music at an early age. His mother gave him his first guitar at just five years old, and by the time he reached high school, he was writing songs, performing at church, and competing in talent shows.
Winning multiple performance categories in high school gave him the confidence to pursue music as a career — a decision he made at only 13 years old.

Breakthroughs in the Music Industry
By the late 2000s, Zack’s band was opening for major acts like The Neighborhood, Capital Cities, AWOLNATION, and Dashboard Confessional. At just 19, he signed with Windup Records, the largest independent label in the world at the time.
But like many young artists, Zack quickly learned that getting signed was only part of the journey. Creative differences, shifting industry trends, and the sudden death of a label executive led to his band being dropped.
“It felt like the dream turned into a nightmare overnight,” Zack recalls.

Reinvention in the Las Vegas Music Scene
At 25, Zack relocated to Las Vegas, where he immersed himself in the local arts community. A collaboration with a DJ from India led to a breakout release on Chill Nation, opening doors to the global EDM scene.
He soon found himself featured at festivals like Life is Beautiful and working alongside top DJs and producers. But just as momentum built, the pandemic hit — forcing him to pause, reflect, and reconsider his path forward.

Faith and Finding a New Purpose
During 2020, Zack experienced what he calls his born-again moment. Although he had always believed in God, his faith took center stage during this period.
Speaking openly about Christianity in the entertainment industry hasn’t been easy, but Zack emphasizes the importance of authenticity:
“How can you have a platform and not speak about the things that actually matter?”
This shift gave him new clarity about who he was as an artist and as a person.

Launching Modern Headliner: Artist Development in Las Vegas
- Out of these experiences came Modern Headliner, a business designed to help independent artists thrive in today’s music industry. Under the umbrella of his broader brand, Sustainable Creative, Zack now mentors artists in:
Branding and content strategy - Songwriting and production support
- Community building for DJs, singers, and producers
The goal is clear: to provide the kind of support system Zack wishes he had when starting out — a system that helps artists build sustainable careers without losing their integrity.
“Helping other artists chase their dreams has brought me back to my love of music,” Zack said.
What’s Next for Zack Gray
Looking ahead, Zack envisions creating family-friendly music festivals rooted in positivity, excellence, and inclusivity. While not exclusively Christian, these events would focus on clean performances and environments where grandparents, parents, and kids could all enjoy music together.
